-About Bolivian Torch-Trichocereus bridgesii is the old scientific name for the Bolivian Torch cactus. scientifically known as Echinopsis lageniformis, is a fast-growing columnar cactus that can grow up to 2-5 meters tall (6-15 feet).
-Identify Bolivian Torch-
Healthy Bolivian Torch cactus species have a light green outer skin and possess four to eight ribs. Each rib houses honey-colored to brown spines that emerge in clusters of up to four from nodes spaced around 3cm apart. These sharp spines can grow up to 6-10cm in length. Mature Bolivian Torch produces white flowers during the summer.
-How to start Bolivian Torch Cactus from a Cutting?-
1. When you receive your cactus cutting, the wound should be calloused. If still wet for some reason, prop it up for 2-3 days so the end faces the warm sun. *SAFETY Warning: Always wear Gloves when handling cactus!!! If the end rots (this rarely happens in shipping), cut the rotted end off and let the wound dry and calloused.
2. Prepare porous cactus soil mix by adding gravel, perlite, and pumice to regular potting soil, or you can purchase the ready-to-use cactus soil mix we are using. Prepare a pot with drainage holes in the meanwhile. Usually 4-6 inches wider than the diameter of your cactus end.
3. When the wound callouses, insert the cactus cutting into the soil, 2-3 inches down is fine. Use a stick or anything to support the cutting to stand if possible. Place the pot in a dry, shady location for the next month to wait for the roots to appear.
4. Monitoring the root growth during the 1st month is significant. Get the cutting out every week to inspect the growth. Cut away any rotted part as soon as possible to avoid losing the whole plant. No water this month till the roots come out.
5. Start watering your cutting gently when you see the roots and transfer it to any location with bright light. Ensure the potting mix is completely dry during every watering. You can gradually introduce more sun for the next months.
6. When the cactus gets rooted, you can feed your cactus twice every year by adding cactus fertilizer or organic fertilizer to the potting soil as the standard cactus soil mix can't provide enough nutrients cactus needs. *Note: ONLY FERTILIZE IN GROWING SEASONS.
