Girl, 6, sexually assaulted by Telangana school teacher, huge protests erupt

A teacher in Telangana’s Kamareddy district has been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with student leaders and parents staging massive protests demanding strict punishment for the accused and cancellation of the school’s licence.
According to Kamareddy Superintendent of Police Sindhu Sharma, a complaint was received on Monday about the alleged assault in Jeevadhan School.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered under the Pocso Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the police officer said, adding that the accused Nagaraju has been remanded in custody.
On Tuesday, the protesters, including parents, minority and student union leaders, attempted to barge into the school’s premises.

Top police officers arrived at the scene to calm the protesters, but failed in their efforts to maintain calm. During the unrest, one of the officers was injured when stones were thrown towards the school.
Later, the protesters moved towards the local police station, demanding action. The situation escalated further, prompting the police to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Commenting on the protests, SP Sharma confirmed that four police officers were injured and the individuals who instigated the violence and caused destruction at the school were identified.
“Those responsible for the destruction of school property and assault on the police will be punished severely. Strict action will be taken,” she added.
Additionally, cases were registed against two other people for spreading false information on social media.
